Description
Disturbing forces are lurking at the periphery of our minds. Luftmensch is four historical fiction stories blended into one. Mohammed Ali Jinnah, the agnostic, whisky drinking founding father of Pakistan is juxtaposed with Theodor Herzl, the delusional architect of modern Zionism. Jinnah struggles to pursue his career ambitions against the background of his dysfunctional marriage and the religious polarisation in India. Herzl develops an unwavering determination to find supporters for his idea of a new nation state and no amount of ridicule will stop him. Another pair of connected storylines is introduced with Heinrich, a young man obsessed with controlling his inner demons before becoming the leader of the SS, and Haris, a young Bosnian soldier who is recruited by the SS. He finds himself as a walking realisation of Himmler’s insane plan to build a Muslim SS division.
Navigating between the four fragmented storylines, Luftmensch offers plenty of sinister surprises and a healthy dose of magical realism.
